Where CodexBar is better

Where Usage HUD is different

Which one should you use?

CodexBar covers more tools; start there if coverage is what you want. Usage HUD is the calm verdict: one line that says which plan has room, when this one runs out, and how much to trust each number. Both are free, so you can run them side by side.

Questions

Is CodexBar free?

Yes. CodexBar is free and MIT-licensed on GitHub (steipete/CodexBar), checked 2026-09-27.

Should I use Usage HUD or CodexBar?

CodexBar covers more tools; start there if coverage is what you want. Use Usage HUD if you want one verdict line, a pace forecast and a label on each number across Claude, Codex, Gemini, Grok and Ollama. Both are free, so you can run them side by side.

What Usage HUD is

A Mac menu-bar app that shows how much of each Claude, Codex, Gemini, Grok and Ollama window you've used, when it resets, and a label on every number: official, measured, estimated or unknown, with a one-line reason. The Claude number comes from the same endpoint /usage reads. The app never refreshes or changes your login token. Codex numbers come from the rate_limits events in your local session logs.

Which number is right

Each bar says where it came from and how old it is, so a stale or estimated number doesn't pass as official.

Pace, not just percent

It compares how much you've used with how much of the window has passed.

Stays on your Mac

No Usage HUD account and no analytics in the app. A public README badge is opt-in.

What it costs

Mac app

Free

Tip jar: $5, $9 or $19, optional. Signed and notarized by Apple.

  • Your Mac: macOS 14 or later, Apple silicon or Intel.
